THE SWING – Bento Rodrigues, 2015.
Artistic installation. Iron structure under corrosive mud.
Series of photographs by Douglas Magno. The competition was simple. Whoever swung higher won. And every single day, the brother and sister spent hours swinging. Back and forth. Trying to reach higher than the other. "Let's see who touches the sky." It was not as they imagined. But one day, they stepped into the skies.
(translation note: in Portuguese, the same word can refer to sky and heaven)
PSALM 91 – Bento Rodrigues, 2015.
Mixed technique: Holy Bible covered in toxic mud.
Photograph by Douglas Magno. There were no crimes in the village. Fights were rare. At most, discussions during the football game. But protection is never too much. Therefore, the Psalm hung on the wall."No harm will come to you, No disgrace will come to your tent.”And with these words, they went to sleep every night. Reassured that there, in that house, nothing would hurt them. For thousands of nights and days, the Psalm was right. Until the day it wasn't.
BIKE – Bento Rodrigues, 2015.
Ready-made. Lead, nickel, and arsenic mud on metal.
Photograph by Mark Albini. The bike lost its wheels. But the handlebars stayed. The bench was washed away with the mud. The handlebars stayed. The chain disappeared. The handlebars stayed. Just the handlebars. A reason of pride precisely because it was no longer indispensable."Look, mom, without my hands." - Shouted the boy. Everything was gone. But the handlebars stayed.
